Military Uniform Tailor - Joint Base Lewis-McChord-- After the recent U.S. announcement of changes to the regulation of military uniforms, many soldiers rushed to the stores and paid their hard-earned dollars to remove the Velcro. Some soldiers are reluctant to switch because of the cost involved. But one of JBLM's best-kept secrets is about to change that.

The 593rd Sustainment Brigade Company's 295th Garment Repair Shop, located in the 80th Ordnance Battalion pool at JBLM-North, provides uniform repair and maintenance services to all service members free of charge.

Repair shop services include sewing name tags, velcro replacement, zipper replacement and other minor repairs. Replacement Velcro is provided by the store at no cost to the customer.

Sgt. Maj. Scott D. Lesch, of the 112th Military Mail Center, had his name tape, American tape, rank and skill badges sewn into two of his uniforms--one at a Soldier-operated repair shop and one at civilian sewing shop. Although the quality of the Soldier's work was not as high as that of the civilians, Lesch said he still uses their services if he needs the Velcro on his uniform replaced.

"This is a great service for our Soldiers," Lesch said. "It was done professionally. And everything is within the rules."

"We can save the Soldiers a lot of money - about $15 per uniform," said Sgt. 1st Class Alecia D. Booker, a platoon sergeant and clothier assigned to the 295th QMC, and a native of Thomasville, N.C.

The benefits are twofold. "It gives these guys more training — a chance to do their job," Booker of the Soldiers said in his platoon. "Soldiers want more work. We've had a few barters, but not as many as we could."

Soldiers assigned to shop duty were recently trained to adapt to their jobs. In addition, NCOs in the company were trained in troubleshooting and repairing faulty equipment.

Repairs are done in a military trailer so that the sewing shop can be mobilized in field conditions.

"It boosts the morale of Soldiers when they meet their needs, especially in the field," Booker said. In addition to uniform repair, the 295th QMC also offers laundry and shower services.

Those who want to take advantage of the free services should be sure to empty their bags and label all items, Booker said. Shift forms are available in 80 Ord. Mr. motorpool.

Pending the acquisition of the right equipment, the shop will eventually offer name tape embroidery, and canvas repair as well.
